Introduction.
Almost 90% of the world’s countries have shut their schools in efforts to slow the transmission of COVID-19. Malala foundation estimates that 20 million more secondary school-aged girls could be out of school after the crisis has passed. “In a crisis like COVID-19, girls and young women are the first to be removed from school and the last to return,” said Malala Yousafzai. “But educated young women are also critical to public health and economic recovery.
The year 2020 was a shocker to the world. Nigeria was not an exception to this, schools were the first point of call, and government believed that protecting the children was better than having them get the covid-19 virus. Schools were eventually closed. Our children were practical mad dropped out, to join the already over 13.2 million who were not accessing education at that time. For 8 months teachers and students were locked down.
The effect on schools closure and the long stay at home has had much effect on the students, cognitive, socially and all. As schools resumes, it was deemed necessary to prepare teachers and parents alike on supporting the girl child to continue learning during the pandemic and beyond. To support the processes, the Civil Society Action Coalition on Education for All, CSACEFA is conducting three days training for teachers on Gender Stereotyping and Awareness.
Objective: The objective of the training is
- To build the capacity of teachers and parents on gender issues hindering girls continued learning in school and at homes,
- To contribute to reducing the number of out school girls and boys.
Outcome:
At the end of the training, we hope to
- see a more responsive teachers and parents support for girls education in Nigeria,
- Increased awareness and support for 12years’ continuous girls’ education in Nigeria and
- Increased Girls access to continuous learning, transition and completion of 12years education during and after crisis.
